The Virgin Suicides (by LittleThunder)
Just saw this over here, about someone concerned for a friend with possible post-abortion health complications.
Someone suggested they could come to us at Scarleteen, and they most certainly can do that.
But the very first thing we’ll always suggest with this concern is that if the person had a safe, legal abortion, they call the number they were likely given by the clinic for any issues or concerns — often with an on-call nurse or clinician ready to take those calls, even in the middle of the night — or the general number of the provider they went to. The discharge paperwork you’ll usually get after a termination will usually have that number made clearly visible on it, if your nurse or doctor didn’t highlight or circle it to make it even more easy to find.
It’s actually very unusual for there to be serious complications post-abortion with legal procedures, particularly when a patient follows their aftercare instructions to the letter, but any concerns really should be brought directly to that healthcare provider first and foremost. Certainly, abortion is a surgery, and like any surgery, carries risks and the potential for complications following.
In the case someone isn’t asking about a legal procedure, or for some reason can’t access their clinic, on-call nurse or provider, we’re happy to help them figure out where to take things from there directly.
